This week, legislators kicked off the 2025 Legislative Session with committee assembly days. These include committee hearings, caucus discussions, and other meetings.

The House met on Monday and Tuesday, and the Senate met on Thursday and Friday. WFIS is in Olympia and will keep you updated on issues specific to private education. TVW’s website is a great resource for staying apprised of what is happening in the House and Senate. The Legislature’s website also has helpful information.

Bills have been “dropped,” meaning we can read legislators’ first set of bills. WFIS will connect you to essential bills of interest in the weekly newsletter for school leaders who want to be involved in advocacy. Also, because legislators will create a budget and have a deficit to contend with, there will be a lot of heated conversations on education spending. The education budget “ask” by reelected Superintendent Chris Reykdal is considerable, and the mantra is to “fully fund public education.” This is while the federal government grapples with a federal school choice bill.
