The CiHS, bill HB1618, made notable progress this session through productive conversations with Rep. Low, the bill’s sponsor, and with leadership in the education committee. However, for the bill to pass, it will need broader support. The committee, which had previously expressed opposition, is now more open to the idea. That said, there are still key concerns, including the transferability of credits between public universities and the program’s overall cost. Before considering any expansion, the committee is seeking solutions to these issues. Our lobbyist will work closely with us over the interim to address these concerns, strengthen legislative support, and propose improvements to the program.
While we are disappointed that the bill will not pass this session, we remain optimistic about the momentum we’ve gained. The attention we’ve drawn to the inequity of excluding students from this opportunity has already helped raise awareness of the issue, and we’re committed to the bill passing next session.
