Major flooding prompted Level 3 evacuations in Skagit and Snohomish counties. Other regions of Western Washington are also experiencing floods.
Flooded areas need to be cleaned right away to prevent mold. Here are some tips:
- Clean surfaces and everything wet within 24-48 hours.
- Do not mix cleaning products together. Use the least toxic option, like dish detergent, when possible. If using a chemical, follow the label carefully.
- Be aware of hazards like lead and asbestos in building materials.
- Never paint over mold.
- Flood waters often contain sewage, and damage may be hidden or affect the structure.
Playgrounds need careful review before returning to use:
- Follow CDC guidance for reopening outdoor public spaces after flooding.
- Consider testing soils and surfaces for contaminants and remediate if needed.
- Playground surfacing material may need to be replaced – measure levels.
- Ensure your playground still meets the standards set in the Consumer Product Safety Commission Public Playground Safety Handbook.
