The Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) requires early learning programs to test their drinking and cooking water for lead and copper when initially licensed and then every six years. The State Department of Health (DOH) offers a free mail-in water testing program that fulfills this legal requirement.
The DOH mails supplies and instructions to sites to collect water samples and send them back to the lab for testing. If test results show lead levels are too high (at or above 15 parts per billion per Environmental Protection Agency guidelines), grant funding is available to reimburse programs for replacing fixtures that test high for lead.
