Whether public, private, independent, or faith-based, all schools share the fundamental commitment of ensuring the safety and well-being of their students. In today’s charged political and immigration environment, the unexpected presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on school campuses—even if rare—can create confusion, fear, and lasting trauma for all students.
School leaders across Washington are concerned about responding appropriately and lawfully should ICE agents seek access to school grounds or student information. This is not a partisan issue—it is a matter of educational leadership and student protection. Preparing in advance strengthens legal compliance and demonstrates a school’s care and responsibility to its broader community.
WFIS supports clear, consistent, and legally sound protocols for immigration enforcement inquiries. Every school should have plans that align with Washington state law, protect student records, and reflect the school community’s values.
We encourage all schools to review and implement policies that proactively:
- Designate a trained staff lead for any law enforcement interaction
- Ensure staff can identify and appropriately respond to administrative vs. judicial warrants
- Limit the disclosure of student information unless legally compelled
- Communicate clearly with families about rights and support available
- Designate an alternative adult to support children of targeted parents
- Prepare counselors to support students and staff
Earlier this year, WFIS shared key resources with member schools to support preparation efforts:
- ICE Enforcement in Schools & Religious Institutions
- Guidance for Schools on ICE Access & Student Records
Together, we affirm that every student deserves to feel safe and supported at school—and that school campuses should remain places of trust, learning, and inclusion.
