Join Dr. Emily Starrett, instructional coach and math teacher educator, for an interactive professional development workshop this August. This four-day workshop will provide an opportunity to experience and explore research-backed pedagogical strategies that aim to facilitate productive struggleand sense-making in math. We will focus on student-centered instruction that leverages student voice and collaborative talk to strengthen mathematical identities and engagement in the learning and doing of math.
TOPICS OF FOCUS
Student-Centered Math Instruction:
- Teachers will experience and reflect on a variety of mathematical activities that can be adapted to different grade levels and contexts
- Teachers will have time to create, adapt, and plan full lessons
Emphasizing Student Sense-Making, Productive Struggle, and Collaborative Talk:
- Teachers will collaboratively explore different pedagogical strategies, discussing implications and practicality of diverse student needs
Math Identity and Leveraging Student Voice:
- Teachers will deeply explore math identity and learn ways to leverage students’ personal and prior experiences in the classroom
OUTCOMES
After the four days, teachers will walk away with:
- Knowledge and applicability of new pedagogical strategies that highlight student voice
- Experience with student-centered, inclusive instructional practices to enhance student talk and critical thinking
- Ready-to-go lesson plans tailored to their classrooms
