Position Description:
The Extended Day Assistant Teacher is part of Epiphany School’s Extended Day staff. The Extended Day Program is a safe, fun, and inclusive space for our Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade students. The program has an emphasis on developing social-emotional skills and provides a blend of enrichment classes and self-directed activities that allow students to interact with students across grade levels.
Enrichment classes include, but are not limited to, athletic activities, arts and crafts, cooking, technology, and music classes led by both Epiphany School Extended Day teachers and external organizations. The after-school enrichment program strives to support the school-day program in fostering a love of learning by exposing students to a variety of disciplines.
This is a part-time, non-exempt, academic year position with expected 20 hours per week and reports to the Extended Day Program Manager. During the school year, Extended Day has both morning and afternoon programs. The Morning shift is 6:45-8:30am and the afternoon shift is 2:15-6:15pm, Monday through Friday. A combination of these shifts is available and should be discussed with the Extended Day Program Manager. Additionally, the program is open for full days and evening programs during school breaks and special events. The hours are usually 8:00am-6:00pm and/or 6:00pm-8:00pm. Shifts within these times are available occasionally.
The main responsibility of Extended Day program staff is to provide highly engaging activities with students while maintaining a positive, safe, and engaging environment for children to play and learn. You will help create and implement highly engaging Extended Day activities that include educational objectives supporting literacy and numeracy. Extended Day teaching staff must uphold the values and goals of Epiphany School including positive performance in preparedness, attendance, and punctuality.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Primary duties:
- Ensure the safety of students through adequate supervision
- Support the Lead Teachers in developing and selecting projects/activities that are appropriate and adaptable for ages within assigned group by sharing ideas for education objectives supporting literacy and numeracy
- Implement daily plans outlined by Lead Teachers
- Communicate with other Lead Teachers, Assistant Teachers, and Substitute Teachers when behavior issues arise
- Provide leadership for students, bringing positive energy with a focus of supporting individual needs of students while being aware of group dynamics
- Attend planning meetings regularly
- Support in the completion of necessary paperwork on time (i.e., incident reports, medical incidents, etc.)
- Participate in planning meetings by reviewing the daily schedules outlined by the Lead Teacher
- Provide thought partnership by raising any potential challenges or concerns
- Engage in collaborative problem-solving within the assigned team so students are best set up for a positive and successful experience
- Spend available planning time by reviewing daily schedules, student support issues, and sharing updates with team before student supervision begins
- Support Lead Teachers in maintaining an open communication channel with day teachers and administrators
- Support Lead Teachers in end-of-day debrief meetings by sharing incidents, issues, or considerations
- Be cognizant of licensing requirements and appropriate ratios; communicate concerns to Lead Teachers and the Extended Day Program Manager if necessary
- Support the training of new staff in partnership with the Extended Day Manager and Lead Teachers of team processes and communication expectations
- Provide support to other cohorts as necessary
Shared Responsibilities Across Extended Day Team:
- Help students develop organization, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills
- Set up and clean activities daily (complete end of day checklists)
- Prioritize safety and self-care issues (i.e., bathroom breaks, hydration, meals/snacks, etc.)
- Ensure students are set up for successful interactions with one another and with staff
- Proactively communicate with team about any changes in daily schedules/plans
- Actively engage with students during program hours, including assisting students with homework, supervising play time, and supporting creative projects
- Participate in collaborative problem-solving with the larger Extended Day team to ensure daily schedules run smoothly
Typical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Experience working with and/or teaching children within the ages of 3 to 10 years preferred
- High School diploma or GED required
- Commitment to Epiphany School’s mission, vision, and values
- Proven appreciation and love for teaching and engaging with children
- Developed skills in organization, lesson and activity planning and implementation
- Experienced with classroom management a plus
- Experience in conflict resolution a plus
- Ability to pivot from schedules and priorities as needed and ability to remain flexible
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to engage with Epiphany School staff and faculty in a professional and appropriate manner (note: family interactions will not be required)
- Meet all Epiphany School health and safety training requirements (i.e., food handlers card, CPR/First Aid, etc.) which can be obtained during the onboarding process

Additional training is required to work with our Pre-K students which include:
Ability to obtain the following (the school will cover all associated costs to obtain)
- Background check including fingerprinting
- WA State Food Handlers Permit
- STARS 30-hour child-care basics training
- Proof of a negative TB test
- Proof of MMR immunization
- Bloodborne pathogens training
- CPR/First Aid certification
Compensation & Benefits:
The starting hourly rate ranges from $26.00 – $32.25, depending on the years of full-time, paid, relevant experience. Part-time and/or seasonal work will be calculated and converted into full-time experience to determine the rate of pay.
As part of the onboarding process, successful candidates will meet with the HR Manager to review years of experience and confirm the hourly rate.
Due to the part-time nature of this position, this role is not eligible to receive the full benefits package, however, paid sick and safe time is accrued at a rate of 1 hours per every 40 hours worked. Extended Day staff have access to the school’s employee assistance program and have the option to contribute to a 403(b) retirement plan.
