Private schools have not had a representative on the PESB since its reorganization in 2009, despite educating 8% of the state’s enrolled K12 students. With recent critical decisions about clock hours and other issues impacting private schools, it is important that a teacher from private schools be on this board.

The Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) comprises twelve members appointed by the governor, most of whom are practicing educators. PESB is responsible for policy and oversight of Washington’s educator preparation, certification, assignment, and development (RCW). It works to strengthen the state’s educator workforce through initiatives that address educator shortages, reduce barriers to the profession, and increase workforce diversity. For private schools, serving on this board offers the voice of an alternative education system and impacts teacher preparation and available instructional hours.

As of November 8, 2024, there are two teacher and one Superintendent openings. All interested applicants must apply to the Governor’s Office through this portal. As stated in the RCW 28A.410.200:

3) In appointing board members, the governor shall consider the individual’s commitment to quality education and the ongoing improvement of instruction, experiences in the public schools or private schools, involvement in developing quality teaching preparation and support programs, and vision for the most effective yet practical system of assuring teaching quality. The governor shall also consider the diversity of the population of the state.

The PESB meets for two days five times a year in various parts of the state. This year’s schedule can be found on the PESB website.
