Last week’s OSPI SWAC meeting convened diverse educators, law enforcement, state agency personnel, and policy advisors to fulfill the legislative mandate to provide training, funding, statewide data collection, and other support for schools and districts.
The group heard from Salli Evers, now with the Department of Homeland Security (formerly with ESD101), about the DHS Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships (CP3) for WA, ID, and AK. The CP3 mission is to build local networks focused on preventing targeted violence and terrorism. Because local law enforcement often cannot intervene before acts occur, this CP3 agency aims to provide locally tailored programs, including training and funding.
Though new to the PNW, CP3 has been implemented nationwide to work with public and private sector entities by generating job programs, involving communities, and raising bystander awareness. One powerful example highlighted was Nu Art Education in California, which uses theatre arts to engage students in conflict resolution strategies. CP3 funded this program with $600K.
