At the May meeting, the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department shared key updates affecting school operations:
- Staffing & Inspections: Two inspectors have left the School Safety team. Due to budget constraints, routine inspections are paused, but plan reviews, pre-opening inspections, and inspections needed for state approval (every 3 years) are still available by request.
- Respiratory Illness Guidance: Updated Department of Health (DOH) guidance is available in multiple languages. Portable air cleaners must meet HEPA and sound level standards (45 dB). NIOSH offers a free iPhone app to measure sound levels.
- Student Health & Safety: Schools may not deny enrollment based on toilet training. Guidelines outline facility and hygiene requirements—especially for students with disabilities or incontinence. Toilet Training Guidelines (OSPI)
- Gardens & Food Safety: Food handler permits are required to prepare garden produce. Schools must apply if they lack a permitted food prep area. Contact: fo**@***hd.org
- Pesticide Use: Restricted-use pesticides require special licensing. All applications must be posted 48 hours in advance. Compliance Guide
- Playground Standards: Surfacing must meet updated ASTM standards and be replaced when contaminated. New rules apply to “Trolley Ride” structures. Plan reviews are required before new installations.
The next TPCHD School Advisory meeting will be in November 2025.
