The Washington state Senate voted over the weekend to ban assault-style firearms used in many mass shootings. If the ban is signed into law as expected, we’ll be among just a handful of states to outlaw AR-15s and the like.

On Saturday, the WA State Senate approved a ban on the sale of assault weapons in our state. Following more than four hours of debate, the Senate approved House Bill 1240 on a 27-21 vote. The proposal passed the state House last month on a 55-42 vote. Because the bill was amended in the Senate, it must return to the House for a vote of approval on the final language.

Gov. Jay Inslee’s signature of support for the ban is expected once the House gives final approval.
