WFIS’ Executive Director Suzie Hanson attended the State Council for American Private Education Network meeting in Washington, D.C., last week. The highlight of the visit was our regular meeting with U.S. Department of Education officials about the private school landscape nationwide and how their office is able to assist in the states.
While there is much uncertainty due to the new administration, the Office of Nonpublic Education was, as usual, helpful and positive in helping private schools in every state. We met with the Chief of Staff and the Director of Faith from the new administration, who came to address the group, and we were able to articulate concerns about how converting Title funds into block grants given directly to the states may exclude private schools and their equitable services provisions. We often rely on the USDE to help navigate issues, and we hope to continue to be able to do so.
The U.S. Senate confirmed new Education Secretary, Linda McMahon, on this same day and swore her in.
