This week, WFIS visited Spokane to attend the Association of Washington Business Legislator’s reception, connect with early learning and K12 advocates, and watch the OSPI and Gubernatorial debates live. We also prioritized connecting with local private schools and education officials. The trip offered many opportunities to discuss shared goals and explore the resources available to private schools in the region.
Our first stop was to connect with Michael Dougherty, President, and Rose Wysocki, Vice President of Finance, at Gonzaga Prep, to discuss legislative opportunities and hear about the school’s commitment to student development. From there, we visited St. Michael’s Academy, housed in a historic Jesuit seminary building now serving as a K-12 school with a small boarding program. Sister Michael Marie, Principal of 7th-12th grade, shared insights into the school’s unique education model.
Next, we met with PJ Deming, Principal, and Joe Hess, Vice Principal for Administration, at Upper Columbia Academy. We learned about the school’s commitment to academic and spiritual growth and exciting upcoming grounds projects. Our final school visit was to Summit Christian Academy, where Yuliya Tarasov, Principal, shared the school’s vision for regional growth and expansion.
WFIS also met with the Environmental Health Specialist Sandy Phillips at the Spokane County Health District to explore the public health services available to private schools. We connected with School Health and Safety Specialists at ESD 101, including Risk Manager Don Ebert, Public Health Specialist Amy Lutz, and Director of School Nurse Corp Alma McNamee. They provided an overview of the resources and support services accessible to private schools in Spokane County. These discussions underscored opportunities for collaboration and increased access to services that benefit both public and private schools.
