Yesterday, Benton–Franklin Health District shared valuable safety and environmental updates for K–12 programs that apply broadly to all Washington schools.

CTE and Visual Arts Safety:

Schools were reminded that proper chemical segregation and labeling are essential for science and art classrooms. Flammable materials exceeding 10 gallons must be stored in non-ventilated, self-closing cabinets with visible labels. Donated supplies should always be inspected for hazards before acceptance. Safety practices such as tying back hair, wearing closed-toe shoes, maintaining safety zones around equipment, and weekly testing of eyewash stations were reinforced. For ceramics and 3D printing, the guidance emphasized ventilation, use of low-toxicity materials, and containment of airborne particles.

Indoor Air Quality and New Regulations:

The state’s updated School Environmental Health & Safety rule (WAC 246-370) will soon require written Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) plans and radon testing. Schools are encouraged to start developing plans now, including ventilation checks, mold prevention procedures, and integrated pest management. Prohibitions on scented products and temperature management plans are also expected.

Radon Testing and Mitigation:

Vancouver public school district shared models for low-cost radon testing that schools can replicate, including winter testing of ground-contact rooms and clear documentation of results. Rooms with levels above 4 pCi/L should be retested or mitigated promptly. (see article below for specifics)

Ecology Programs and Funding Opportunities:

While private schools are not eligible for the PCB light ballast replacement reimbursement, they may be eligible for Ecology’s Auto Shop Degreaser Program, which supports safer, water-based alternatives and offers up to $10,000 in reimbursements. Additional $500 vouchers are available for schools addressing dangerous waste or stormwater concerns.

Next Steps:

BFHD will begin scheduling school inspections of elementary school classrooms and spaces, as well as education team conferences. Look for the registration email in the coming weeks. Schools are encouraged to focus on general cleanliness, review ventilation systems, and use only non-toxic, unscented classroom materials in preparation for upcoming visits.
