Washington’s Clean Buildings Performance Standard represents a significant shift in how nonresidential buildings—including many private school facilities—are expected to plan for energy efficiency and long-term compliance. To support private K–12 schools navigating these requirements, the Washington Federation of Independent Schools (WFIS) has developed the Clean Buildings Guide for Private Schools in Washington.
This guide was created specifically for private school leaders, business managers, and facilities teams seeking to understand how the Clean Buildings law applies to their campuses. While the legislation is complex and evolving, private schools need clear, practical information to make informed decisions without diverting limited resources from their core educational mission.
The WFIS Clean Buildings Guide provides:
-
A clear overview of the Clean Buildings Performance Standard and its relevance to private schools
-
Key compliance timelines and thresholds
-
Practical explanations of energy use intensity (EUI) targets and reporting requirements
-
An overview of available options for support
-
Guidance on planning next steps, even if compliance deadlines are several years away
WFIS developed this resource as part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring private schools are informed, prepared, and represented as statewide policies are implemented. We continue to engage with the State Board of Education, OSPI, the Department of Commerce, and other partners to elevate the unique realities of private school facilities and operations. The guide is intended to be a living resource and will be updated as new information becomes available.
