The NCES recent webinar provided an overview of the newest private school data from several national surveys. Some highlights:

  • In the 2021-2022 school year, approximately 4.7 million K-12 students were enrolled in 29,700 private schools with 483,000 full-time equivalent teachers across the US.
  • 66% of private schools reported a religious orientation.
  • Between the 2019-2020 and the 2021-2022 school year, the number of private schools decreased by 3% across the country. The number of elementary schools decreased by 6%, and the number of Catholic schools decreased by 5%.

Access all the TFS, PFS, NTPS reports, and PSS data on the NCES website for comprehensive findings on schools, principals, and teachers.

Each year, WFIS hears from member schools wondering if the NCES surveys are legitimate. This is a reminder that if your school does receive these surveys in the mail from NCES, it is very beneficial to the understanding of private schools nationally if you fill them out and send them back in!
