Each year, the William Randolph Hearst Foundation sponsors two high school juniors or seniors from each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia to attend the United States Senate Youth Program – an all-expense-paid, week-long tour of Washington, DC, and to receive a $10,000 scholarship.
The Association of Washington School Principals (AWSP) administers this program in Washington State. In the fall, a committee reviews the nominees, interviews each finalist, and selects two delegates from WA State.
For the 2024-2025 school year, each applicant must complete:
- The digital application (https://awsl.formstack.com/forms/ussyp_24_25)
- The activities resume
- A letter of recommendation from their Activity Adviser, Principal, Assistant Principal, Superintendent, or adult in a similar key position
- A 250-word essay on a significant leadership trait by 4 pm on September 27, 2024
COMPLETED materials are sent to Julie Woods (julie@awsp.org)
The selection committee will review the application and select up to 15 finalists who will participate in the final selection process via Zoom on November 8, 2024.
Finalists must be available to participate on this day.
Our state senators’ offices will announce the Washington State winners in early December. In March 2025, they will join other state winners for a week in Washington, D.C., and must be able to attend all days of this Washington Week.
