Washington’s Clean Buildings Performance Standard introduces new energy efficiency requirements that will affect many private school facilities in the years ahead. To help schools understand and prepare for these changes, WFIS has released the Clean Buildings Guide for Private Schools in Washington.

Private schools educate over 80,000 students and operate within a wide range of regulatory, financial, and governance structures distinct from public school districts. The guide provides clear, school-focused information on compliance timelines, planning considerations, and available support, enabling schools to proactively prepare for implementation that aligns with the realities of private education operations.

The guide includes:

  • Compliance timelines, building thresholds, and energy use expectations
  • Planning considerations for facilities management
  • Guidance for schools operating in leased facilities
  • An overview of technical assistance opportunities
  • Practical next steps for school leaders

WFIS developed this guide to support private schools in planning responsibly and strategically. As policies move from legislation to implementation, WFIS continues to advocate for clarity, flexibility, and recognition of the vital role private schools play in Washington’s K–12 education landscape.

Visit the WFIS Clean Buildings Guidance webpage to access the latest guide. It will be updated as needed.

We encourage school leaders to review the guide, share it with facilities and finance teams, and reach out to WFIS with questions or feedback as we continue this work together.
