As routines shift with the summer season, it’s important to ensure students with diabetes stay safe and supported. Highlights from the Navigating Challenges & Supporting Families for a Safer Summer session in May covered:

Heat and Insulin Safety

  • Keep insulin cool and out of direct sun—use specialized coolers, not ice.
  • Prevent sunburn and dehydration, which can disrupt blood sugar regulation and increase the risk of DKA.

Shifting Routines & Caregivers

  • Summer changes in diet, activity, and schedules may affect glucose levels.
  • Ensure all caregivers—whether at home, camp, or elsewhere—understand diabetes basics and emergency response.

Encouraging Independence

  • Support students in practicing new diabetes management skills.
  • Families should schedule endocrinology appointments and complete school forms for the next year.

Summer Safety Plans

  • Talk to older students about alcohol risks and diabetes.
  • Prepare a diabetes “to-go” kit with testing and emergency supplies for all summer activities.
