Strengthening independent education in Washington

Dear Private School Leaders and Supporters,

Behind every policy debate, WFIS reinforces the importance of the students, families, and educators who rely on schools for educational opportunity and community. WFIS ensures private schools are represented in Washington’s policy conversations and clearly understood for the vital role they play in the state’s K–12 landscape.

This legislative session underscored both the shared challenges all schools face and the importance of recognizing the distinct roles of public and private education. From student safety to access to higher education, policy considerations reflect a common goal: ensuring that all students, across all settings, have the opportunity to learn.

For example, schools across Washington are working to improve campus safety through updated emergency preparedness plans and increased access to mental health resources—efforts that benefit students regardless of where they are enrolled. At the same time, initiatives such as expanding dual-credit programs and financial aid opportunities help more students take meaningful steps toward college and career pathways.

As these efforts move forward, it is essential that policies are implemented to ensure equitable access for all students. When barriers limit participation based solely on the school setting, students are left without the support available to their peers. Crafting thoughtful, balanced policy solutions with input from both public and private school leaders helps ensure that all students benefit and strengthens the entire education system.

WFIS continues to engage thoughtfully in this work and is invested in keeping school leaders informed about policy issues. Our WFIS Weekly Update goes only to WFIS members, providing the most current information affecting private education in Washington.
