Athletes carry enormous influence in their school communities. Their behavior sets the tone not only for their teammates but for peers throughout the school. Athletes As Leaders is a free leadership program designed to help coaches harness that influence for positive culture-building, healthier relationships, and student well-being.
The program originated in Seattle and has grown nationally. Coaches use simple 20-minute weekly sessions that build critical skills: empathy, communication, consent awareness, and strong team norms. Evaluations show that athletes gain confidence, leadership ability, and a clearer understanding of healthy vs. unhealthy behaviors.
Many private school leaders will recognize one of the program’s earliest adopters: O’Dea High School. Known statewide for athletic achievement, O’Dea has used Athletes As Leaders for nearly ten years. Athletic Director Monte Kohler reports that what seemed like a time-consuming commitment at first has become an essential part of the school’s athletic culture—saving time overall, reducing conflicts, and building more cohesive teams.
Virtual training sessions coming up (free, must attend both):
- December 2 – Program overview, youth context, and facilitation foundations
- December 4 – Mock sessions, readiness planning, and implementation logistics
These sessions prepare coaches to bring the curriculum directly to their teams with no special materials or tech required.
