The January DiSH (Diabetes in School Health) session addressed common diabetes supply challenges in school settings and shared practical strategies to support continuity of care. It was hosted by Erin Sundberg, ARNP, Pediatric Endocrinology & Diabetes, Seattle Children’s Hospital. Check out the session’s slides and recording.
Key reminders included identifying and maintaining essential diabetes supplies: blood glucose monitoring tools, insulin and delivery devices, and emergency glucagon. While surplus supplies are ideal, insurance and access barriers often limit availability. CGM or pump failures, though disruptive, are not emergencies; blood glucose meters and injections can be used as temporary alternatives.
The session emphasized proactive supply management and clear communication:
- Confirm exactly which supplies are needed and ensure shared understanding among families and school staff.
- Ask how families obtain supplies and whether transportation or language access affects timely refills.
- Verify that dispensed quantities align with prescribed and actual use.
- Be mindful of limited supplies when balancing testing needs.
Additional school-based strategies included protecting refrigerated insulin by regularly monitoring temperatures and planning for power outages by coordinating with facilities staff.
